Why are agricultural program payments received on a form 1099-G added to farm expenses on the Income Summary page? They should be subtracted to result in net income.

Under Business Items, Farm Income and Farm Rental, the Farm Rentals Summary page subtracts expenses from the agricultural program payments to provide the net income (as expected). However, this net income value is not what is posted on the Income Summary page for Farm Income and Farm Rental. The value listed on the Income Summary page for Farm Income and Farm Rental is the sum of the agricultural program payments and the expenses.

The Income Summary page is not always a reflection of your actual return. As long as the individual categories have been entered correctly, your final return should be correct. You can confirm this by reviewing Schedule F and Form 4835.
