It is automatic based on your age. It is not part of your Standard Deduction. The new Senior Deduction is separate and in addition to the Standard Deduction or your Itemized Deductions on 1040 line 12e. The 6,000/12,000 senior deduction will be calculated on 1040 Schedule 1-A page 2 Part V Enhanced Deduction for Seniors which goes to 1040 line 13b with any other sch 1-A amounts. Turbo Tax automatically includes it if you qualify. If you are married you have to file a Joint return.

The “senior deduction” is added automatically by the software based on the date of birth and filing status you entered into MY INFO.  You do not need to take any extra steps to enter it. (And…the new senior deduction has nothing to do with whether you are getting Social Security)

2025 STANDARD DEDUCTION AMOUNTS

SINGLE $15,750  (65 or older/legally blind + $2000)

MARRIED FILING SEPARATELY $15,750  (65 or older/legally blind +1600)

MARRIED FILING JOINTLY $31,500  (65 or older/legally blind + $1600)

HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD $23,625 (65 or older/legally blind + $2000)

For 2025 through 2028 there is an extra  deduction amount of up to $6000 per individual 65 or older filing Single, MFJ, or HOH which is phased out for taxpayers with modified adjusted gross income over $75,000 for single filers and $150,000 for joint filers.

(The deduction phases out completely at $175.000 Single or HOH, or $250,000 joint)

The $6,000 senior deduction will be calculated on 1040 Schedule 1-A page 2 Part V Enhanced Deduction for Seniors which goes to 1040 line 13b. It is separate and in addition to the Standard Deduction or your Itemized Deductions on 1040 line 12e.  Turbo Tax automatically includes it.

Why am i not getting the extra $6000 added to my standard deduction??

TurboTax does the calculations of the additional deductions for being age 65 or older for you.

Standard deductions for 2025

Single - $15.750 add $2,000 if age 65 or older
Married Filing Separately - $15,750 add $1,600 if age 65 or older
Married Filing Jointly - $31,500 add $1,600 for each spouse age 65 or older
Head of Household - $23,625 add $2,000 if age 65 or older

New Bonus Standard Deduction (OBBB):
An additional $6,000 deduction for taxpayers 65 and older.
This is per eligible individual, meaning a married couple both over 65 could get $12,000.
Important: This bonus deduction is temporary, lasting from 2025 through 2028.
Income limitations: It phases out for taxpayers with modified adjusted gross income over $75,000 for single filers and $150,000 for joint filers.

The amount is calculated on Schedule 1-A, Part V, with that amount flowing to Form 1040 Line 13b

Look at your Form 1040 -

You can view your Form 1040 plus Schedules 1, 2 and 3 at any time using the online editions. Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the online program screen. Click on Tools. Click on View Tax Summary. Click on Preview my 1040 on the left side of the screen.

It depends. First be sure you have the correct birth date for each spouse. Next you can preview your tax return because it's not part of the standard deduction. It is a separate deduction from income and not a credit. See the instructions below to check for it on your tax return. Next see the qualifications to get the extra deduction.

To qualify, the following must apply:

  • If your income is above $75,000 ($150,000 if Married filing jointly) the bonus deduction decreases by $.06 for every dollar over the relevant amount.
  • This deduction is available whether you itemize or take the standard deduction.
  • If your filing status is married filing separately you are not eligible for this deduction.
  • This bonus deduction is ONLY for those over 65, it does not apply to those who are blind and under 65.

From the left rail menu in TurboTax Online, select Tax Tools (You may have to scroll down on the left rail menu.)

  1. Select Tax Tools
  2. On the drop-down select Tools
  3. On the pop-up menu titled “Tools Center”, select View Tax Summary
  4. On the left sidebar, select Preview my 1040
  5. See Line 13-B on your 1040 for the amount. Additional deductions from Schedule 1-A, line 38

For TurboTax Desktop, change to 'Forms' and review the forms.

Good response. However, my belief is that I have a non updated version of the software.

Why am i not getting the extra $6000 added to my standard deduction??

@dkefford

However you look at it.

DO NOT look for it to be added directly to your Std Deduction.

It is showing  and used on an entirely separate line of your form 1040.

The new 6,000/12,000 shows up separately, and is part-or-all of line 13b on your form 1040

Your Std Ded, that TTX reports for you, is on line 12e

That's the problem, it's calculating the deduction.

Why am i not getting the extra $6000 added to my standard deduction??

@rm210   Is it calculating the deduction or not calculating it?   What is your question?   What is on 1040 or 1040 SR line 13b?
