Why am I not getting any tax refund for my dependent?

Right now it only shows me my tax refund for state and from my W-2, so will my dependent refund show up later?

There is no separate refund for the dependent ... on the federal return you only get one refund that includes everything.

Review the federal form 1040 ...

Child Tax Credit line 19

Credit for Other Dependents line 19

Earned Income Credit line 27

Additional Child Tax Credit line 28

You can view the Form 1040 for free at any time during preparation prior to paying and filing:

  • Open your return, and in the left menu column, choose TAX TOOLS, then choose TOOLS.
  • In the Tools window, choose View Tax Summary.
  • When the Tax Summary opens, look in the left menu column and choose Preview My 1040.

Or you can pay in advance to view/print the Form 1040 and all forms and worksheets prior to filing.  Here's how:

  • Open your return, and in the left menu column, choose Tax Tools, then Print Center.
  • Then choose "Print/save/preview this year's return."
  • On the next screen choose to "Pay now".
  • The next screen should be an Order Summary.  Review that, and if all is OK, click Continue.
  • It should then prompt you for payment by credit or debit card.  The screen only says "credit card", but it will take a debit card.

NOTE:  If it should offer you the option to "pay later" out of the Federal refund, that can't be used for this purpose.  You will need to pay now by credit/debit card in order to download/print prior to filing.

.  The child tax credit  (CTC) is  limited to your tax liability. The CTC is a non-refundable credit and can only reduce your income tax to 0, It can not help you beyond eliminating your tax liability. But, if you have more than $2500 of earned income, some or all of it is usually given back to you thru the "Additional Child tax credit". That is, part of the CTC may be on line 28 of form 1040 (2021 & 2022) instead of line 19. The  ACTC is calculated on form 8812 and  is basically 15% of your earned income over $2500. The ACTC is a maximum of $1500 per child (not $2000).
