Why am I not eligible for an education tax break? I am not dependant on anyone else, and I needed to purchase my school books and laptop for school.

The education tax break analyzer states I am not eligible because somebody else can claim me as a dependent (I am single, and no one has claimed me as a dependent in years) or there were no net qualified education expenses. Books and computer are qualifying expenses.

Go back to My Info and edit your name.  Make sure that you did NOT indicate that you can be claimed as a dependent.
