why am i being charged to file when i have one w-2 for less than $5000 and nothing else?

It all depends on what other forms are needed in your tax file.

Itemized deductions requires a paid version.

Some special credits require a paid version.

Some folks with box 12, Code D $$ amounts have a Retirement Savings Tax Credit, which is sometimes way smaller than the Paid version cost....  [[But they can get rid of that by indicating thyme are a Student in the My Info section (((even if they aren't)))  ]]

The charge depends on which edition of TurboTax Online you are using. You didn't say which edition you are using. Only Free Edition is free. If you use another edition you have to pay for the edition you are using, even if the tax return is very simple and could have been filed with Free Edition.
