Where do I put my Dependents W-2 Information in my return

My child is 17 and has a W-2. However the system does not ask for her income anymore. I do not know where I should enter it.

MY DEPENDENT HAD A JOB

If your dependent has a W-2 for his after-school job, summer job, etc. you do not include the information on your own return. You can still claim your child as a dependent on your own return.  He/she can file his own return for a refund of some of his withheld wages from boxes 2 or 17 (he won’t get back anything for Social Security or Medicare), but MUST indicate on it that he can be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return.  (Supervise this closely or prepare it for him!)

If your dependent’s earnings were over $400 and were reported on a 1099Misc or 1099NEC then he must file a return and pay self-employment tax for Social Security and Medicare.

You might also want to use free software from the IRS Free File versions:

Since your child has earned income, it is either entered on their return or not filed, depending on the amount of income earned and tax withheld. For the federal:

  • If your child had wage and passive income below $14,600 there would be no income tax and a return is not required.
  • If your child had babysitting, lawnmowing, contract work income over $400 - a return must be filed.
  • If a return is not required, a refund of tax withheld is another reason to file. Try using the free version.
  • xmasbaby0 is correct that kids will claim themselves and mess up the parents return for months. Be sure the program is marked that someone else is claiming them.

You say the program isn't asking for her income, perhaps you have been filing the Kiddie tax on her passive income. If so, she would add that to her return, if she files. See What is the Kiddie Tax?

For the state: you will need to check state filing requirements. Some states like PA start at just $33 of income.
