Where do I look for a mistake when TurboTax is indicating I don't owe taxes for North Carolina even though I (NR) was filing because I had gambling winnings (W2-G)?

I'm a Non resident.  I've been through the wizard several times, but cannot determine why it indicates I owe $0.  I've had to file in prior years for other W2-Gs and it's usually ~100 owed.

I ended up contacting TurboTax Customer Support.  After some time, they indicated there was an issue with TurboTax online and sent me the Desktop version to fill out (which did work correctly). It was confirmed I did owe taxes to NC after all, but TTO was not showing correctly.

If you have filed for North Carolina before with a W2-G, you could compare this year's NC return with a prior year to see where the differences are.

However, your NC gambling income may be below the Filing Requirements, so that you're not required to file.

Here's more info on NC Non-Resident Taxes.

Thanks for the response. I meet the filing requirements. It appears when i print out the forms it's printing zero for Total NC income in the NC D400 SCH PN instead of placing the right amount there.  Not quite sure how to fix that.

Will keep going through the wizard. I really don't want to spend $90 bucks to see where I'm going wrong.

Go back through your NC return and make sure you allocated your gambling winnings to NC.   You should come to a screen that asks you to allocate the portion of your federal gambling/other income that belongs to NC.

Did you tell TurboTax in the personal section that you had Other State Income?

With your return open, select My Info in the menu.

  1. On the Personal info summary screen, scroll down to Other State Income, and select Edit.
  2. At the Did you make money in any other states? question, answer Yes and make sure your nonresident state(s) are selected from the drop-down.
  3. Select Continue to return to your Personal info summary.

After you finish your federal return, you'll automatically move to the State tab, where you'll see your nonresident state(s) listed in addition to your resident state.

Sorry for the delay on reply.  Thanks again for your help.

The winnings were assigned to North Carolina after checking personal info/other state info as you described.

The nonresident income allocation screen was filled out as you described, with the gambling winnings amount in the North Carolina Income while non resident box.

I'm beginning to think this may be a bug. I will contact the 1800 number and find out more.
