Commuting expenses like gas, mileage, or toll fees between your home and main workplace are not deductible on your federal return. A few states allow you to deduct certain commuter related expenses, but that has to be done on your state return.
However, if you travel to and from a temporary work location (where your assignment is expected to last no more than 1 year) outside your metropolitan area, you can claim commuting expenses (toll fees). You can also claim commuting expenses to and from a temporary work site, regardless of location, as long as your main workplace is elsewhere.
If these toll fees are for temporary work commute, here's where to enter your job-related expenses(toll fees):
- Open (continue) your return in TurboTax if it's not already open.
- Online versions: Make sure you've selected the Take me to my return button.
- In TurboTax, search for 2106 and then select the "Jump to" link in the search results.
- At the Tell us about the occupation you have expenses for screen, enter your occupation, then select Continue.
- If you land on the Job-Related Expenses Summary screen, you can select Add Another Occupation (to add another 2106), Edit (for an existing 2106), or Delete.
- Follow the onscreen instructions.
