We'll help you get started or pick up where you left off.

When using turbo tax state, MA form 1 line 3 the number in the cell appears way off, almost double the amount of the two W-2s we have. Could this be a bug?

When we read the mass documents it says add all line 16s from your W2s for us this is nearly half what turbo tax puts in mass form 1 line 3, this of course is calculating a lot of extra tax.

If you'd like, we can look at your return and see exactly what you see to  help come to a resolution. The return will be scrubbed and won't include any of your personal details.

If you're using TurboTax Online:

Once you're logged in to your account,

- on the left hand panel, click on Tax Tools and then choose Tools

- on the pop up window, select Share my file with Agent

- you'll see a message saying you'll give us a copy of your tax return. Your personal information will be changed so we can't see any private information.

- click okay and you'll get another message with a token

If you're using TurboTax Desktop:

  • Click on Online in the top menu of TurboTax Desktop for Windows
  • Select 'Send Tax File to Agent'
  • Write down or send an image of your token number and state then place in this issue.
  • We can then review your exact scenario for a solution

Please reply to this message with your token so that we can further assist you. Let us know what other states, if any, are included on the return.

As you mentioned, this happens because Massachusetts instructions require adding all boxes 16 together and includes income that is earned outside of MA. This presents a problem when, in your case, you're a resident of MA the full year but work in another state. The income is reported on the W-2 for both states. Therefore, the state allows an adjustment to be made when the wages are overstated because multiple states are reporting the same income.

To fix this, when you're going through your Massachusetts return you should see a screen that says that TurboTax transferred the full amount of wages from all boxes 16 on your W-2. Click No on this screen to let TurboTax know that this income is not correct.

Because your wages are overstated due to the income being reported in both states, on the next screen click Yes to let TurboTax know to only transfer wages that are marked as MA wages from the W-2.

This will correct your wages and adjust your tax liability in Massachusetts.
