when I filed joint for 2020 I completed my return but there was no form for my wife income

When I filed joint for 2020 I completed my part and there was no form or questions about my wife social security income , so I sent it in . My refund was to be 3,068 , IRS sent a letter saying adjusted refund of $1,868 so I said ok to their figures . My question now is do I need to add her income to this years filing because of not filling out her income properly from 2020  . I always used to be able to list her income on a form after I did mine but 2020 did not have that option . Thanks John

No, you do not have to add her 2020 Social Security to this year's tax return or amend your prior year. Since the IRS has already made the adjustment and you accepted it, no further action needs to be done on your part.

However, you do want to make sure you include her Social Security she received in 2021 on your return if you are filing jointly again. This can be done using the steps outlined by @DoninGA. There should be a column for each of you to put in your separate SSA-1099 information.

I filed my 1040-SR first , and when done I used to see another form to file for the wife SS , but did not see a form , so I sent it in and IRS ADJUSTED refund . Will I see a form this year to do my wife SS after I finish mine . This was for 2020 .                        thanks John

Each year in January the Social Security administration will mail the From SSA-1099 to everyone who received Social Security benefits in the prior year.  You enter your spouse's information from her SSA-1099 in the exact same location in the TurboTax program you use to to enter the information from your SSA-1099.

All income from all sources for each of you are reported on only one tax return when filing as Married Filing Jointly.

Yes, you simply add another document.  Use the Search box (upper right) and type ssa-1099 (include the dash) > Use the Jump to.. link

Next, click to add another.  Or you may see this screen where both are entered on the same page.

When filing a joint tax return and one or each of you receives SS benefits you are required to report those SS benefits received on a tax return.  On the TurboTax program for entering SS both your names are shown to report the benefits received.

To enter Social Security benefits reported on form SSA-1099

  • Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
  • Click on Wages and Income (Personal Income using Home and Business)
  • Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
  • Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security
  • On Social Security (SSA-1099, RRB-1099), click the start or update button

Or enter ssa-1099 in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to ssa-1099
