Whats wrong with this turbo tax software. For 6 weeks of residency in MD, it said I owed over 5,000. So I went to HR block and they got me a small maryland refund.

the usual reason is that you enter something incorrectly in turbo tax.   we can't see the TT return or your source documents.    most of the time it's a misplaced decimal point or a mistyped number even an extra digit. 

this is most likely because if it was a program error there would have been numerous posts about errors in the MD return

Not buying that at all.  Inputted the exact same numbers the exact same way at HR Block
