The IRS lets you deduct sales taxes or state income tax withheld. State withholding is usually higher, but some people use the sales tax deduction, especially if you live in a state with no income tax. If you enter both, TurboTax will give you the bigger deduction.

What type of issue are you having with dates? Two common problems are:

1. The dates lived in the state are for 2021 only, so the maximum time can be January 31 to December 31.
2. If you lived in more than one state, the dates can't overlap. Meaning you can't say you lived in Texas from January 1 to February 1 and then Oklahoma from February 1 because both periods have February 1. You would either have to change the end date to January 31 or the start date to February 2.
