Your vendor in a direct marketing organization is not your employer, so I believe the correct way to report this income would be to treat it as "not paid by my employer."

1099-MISC income can be reported in various places on your tax return, depending on whether it is connected to your Schedule C self-employment business or income of other types.

  • If it is related to your Schedule C business, then you would enter the 1099-MISC income under Business Income and Expenses > Business Income;
  • If it is not related to a Schedule C, then you report it as Other Income on Form 1040, Line 21. You can enter it at Personal Income > Other Common Income > Income from 1099-MISC.
