Contact the employer and ask them why there is a difference. Sometimes there are adjustments due to Health Care Insurance or Retirement Plan options. If it is incorrect, have your employer file a corrected W-2. Do not file your return with an incorrect W-2 as you will land up having to file an amended (1040X).
The employer did not offer health care or retirement plans. What do I do if they refuse to get a corrected w2?
If the difference is close, maybe off by a paycheck, perhaps you did not get your last payment.
You need to contact Human Resources for your former employer and ask questions.
It is easiest to file with the W2.
