What do I do if my parents claim me as a dependent on their taxes yet I made over $5,950 this past year?

If my mom or dad claim me as a dependent on their taxes is it possible to file my own taxes as well? I made over $5,950 this year and want to know if whether or not I can. I'm 19 years old and live on campus. Can we file for both?

How do my son fix his return if he didn’t check someone else can claim him? But instead checked head of household.

EDIT - This post is over 5 years old, and outdated. The amounts are WRONG for later tax years.

Since you made over $3900, you're required to file a tax return. It doesn't matter if you were claimed as a dependent by someone else. However, when you fill out your tax return, you *must* select the option for "I can be claimed on someone else's return" when you see it.

Under the personal info tab, as you are entering your personal information, one of the screens is titled "Do any of these apply to <name>?". Select the one that reads ,"Someone else can claim <name> on their tax return", then continue on through.

What if you didn't select that option on accident?

Have you already filed the return?

Yeah I have, and it was rejected because of that fact. I really need to file it so I can obtain a transcript of it for financial aid for school.

Oh you can just change that and efile again.
Go to Personal Info click EDIT by your name
You should see the Taxpayer's Info screen with  name and ssn
Click Continue
The next screen should say..Do Any of These Apply? With 5 boxes
Check the 3rd box, it says….Someone else can claim "name" on their tax return

See, I've already done that. And I still can't file it.

Then it must now be rejecting for a different reason.  Does it say why or give an error code?

I didn't get an error code, but I'm supposed to change my state withholding ID. I have no idea on how to do that.

The state withholding from your W2 is wrong??  Do you need to fix the state on the W2 entries?

I don't think a state error would make your federal reject.

it just says this: Payer ID-1 must be 14 characters long without dashes, you must go back to federal W-2 or 1099 to update your state withholding ID.
