If my mom or dad claim me as a dependent on their taxes is it possible to file my own taxes as well? I made over $5,950 this year and want to know if whether or not I can. I'm 19 years old and live on campus. Can we file for both?

EDIT - This post is over 5 years old, and outdated. The amounts are WRONG for later tax years.
Since you made over $3900, you're required to file a tax return. It doesn't matter if you were claimed as a dependent by someone else. However, when you fill out your tax return, you *must* select the option for "I can be claimed on someone else's return" when you see it.
Under the personal info tab, as you are entering your personal information, one of the screens is titled "Do any of these apply to <name>?". Select the one that reads ,"Someone else can claim <name> on their tax return", then continue on through.
