I typically do my son's taxes. In August of last year (2025) he rented an apartment with a friend in the same town. He splits his time between our house and the apartment. He kept our home address on his driver's license but he changed his address at work and his W-2 has the address for the apartment on it. Can I just use our home address on his 2025 tax return? Does it matter?

Use the address where you want your son to receive a letter or a check from the IRS.
Yes, the IRS primarily uses that address for mailing correspondence and checks, and it does not need to match the address on his W-2 or driver's license. Since he still spends significant time at your house and considers it his permanent base, keeping your address on his return will ensure he does not miss an official tax notice if he moves apartments again.
The only issue would be if his apartment is in a city with its own local income tax while your home is not; but since you mention the 2 homes are in the same town, that should not be an issue, but double check since some towns have incorporated and unincorporated parts with different local tax obligations.
