We received 2 1095-A forms for 1 policy number. One form covers me, 1 form our daughter. We can't file her taxes because her Column C is blank. How do we file?

Our understanding is that we need to file the 1095-As on each respective tax return, not together since she has her own form (that came in my account) as a tax independent. However, no Column C amount means no 8962 form generated, which means no ability to file in any electronic tax program. Please help!

The reason this seems contradictory is that it's talking about two different scenarios:

  1. Scenario A: Multiple Forms, One Tax Return. If you and your daughter are both on your return, you simply add them together. You add Column A (Premiums) and Column C (APTC) from both forms, but you only use Column B (SLCSP) from one form. In this case, there is no allocation because the money stays in one tax family.
  2. Scenario B: One Policy, Multiple Tax Returns (Shared Policy). If your daughter is filing her own tax return (she is not your dependent), this is a "Shared Policy Allocation." Even if you have two separate physical pieces of paper, it is legally one policy being split between two tax households. This requires an allocation (e.g., 90% for you, 10% for her).

So  in essence, you would take the 1095 A and combine them into one form. If your daughter is filing her own return, then this is to be reported as a shared policy allocation to be reported on both tax returns.

If you haven't filed your return yet, use the corrected forms to file your return. If you have already filed, you will need amend your return. If this is the case, reach back and let us know so we can advise you how best to file your amendment.

There is a screen in the Form 1095-A entry section where you can indicate "Policy shared with another taxpayer".  On that screen (in your return) you should indicate Yes.  You can allocate the premium subsidy in column C any way you want.  Use the amount you choose to allocate to your daughter when entering her Form 1095-A.

Thank you for your response. The way you describe is the way I’ve done it in the past. However, in both IRS and TurboTax literature, it says that if we received two 1095-A forms even for the same policy, they need to be treated entirely separately on each respective taxpayer’s return without any allocations. In the past, we received one form with both my daughter and myself on it.

So confusing! The situation was further complicated by receiving corrected forms after my husband and I filed our return.

Thank you again! We did file my husband’s and my taxes, so an amendment will be necessary.

I am going to give your suggestion a try and see if it works. I tried that with the incorrect 1095-As, but of course it didn’t work.

Hopefully we can get past the other hurtle, too (forcing WA state income tax choice when getting ready to file when there’s no WA state income tax). If it doesn’t work, she will be filing a paper return.

I appreciate your help.

My daughter’s return has been submitted and accepted! Thank you! I was ripping my hair out.

Now we will need help on our amended return. I made a duplicate of our return in TurboTax and tried to delete and enter the corrected 1095-A info to correspond with our daughter’s (her 27%, me 73%) , but I received a bunch of error messages…so I assume there’s a different way to do this.

If you want to make changes or add a document to a tax return that has already been filed and accepted by the taxing agency, you should follow these guidelines.

  • You must first wait until the initial return is completely processed.
  • You will have to use the same TurboTax account that you used for the original tax return.
  • Once you begin your amendment, you'll see your original return.
  • The refund calculator will start new at $0 and only reflect the changes in the refund or tax due
  • Only make changes to the areas of your return that need to be corrected.
  • You have three years from the date you filed your return or two years after you paid the tax due (whichever is later) to file an amendment
