We owed and paid our taxes for 2018. I received a check for the exact amount that we paid in 2017. can someone explain why this would happen?

when irs sends u a check they always send a letter explaining it.  The letter may be a few days behind the check.  If u don't understand call the phone number listed on the letter or if u don't get letter, just  all and ask.
