We co-own & pay our mortgage 50/50, so we're each deducting half the interest. Should we both check the box saying the amount entered is different than what's reported?

No, not if the numbers you claim on each return adds up to the total on the 1098. You both need to be listed on the loan, have made 1/2 the payments and the loan needs to be secured by the home. 

Make a copy of the 1098 so you have a copy for each return.

No, not if the numbers you claim on each return adds up to the total on the 1098. You both need to be listed on the loan, have made 1/2 the payments and the loan needs to be secured by the home.
