We are jointly filing our taxes, while my NRA wife earned all her income outside the US and therefore do not have a W-2 or 1099. How to show her income on joint filing?

I am a US citizen working in the US, while my wife lives abroad and she is a NRA. We go married last year and we are waiting for her immigration paperwork to go through. We are electing to file as Married Filing Jointly with a statement of declaration. But how and where do I show her income on our jointly filed 1040?

FYI, she has an ITIN.

Thank you!

You need to enter her income in the foreign income section of TurboTax.

In TurboTax type in foreign income in the search bar at the top of the screen and click the Jump to link.

Enter her income and a few screens later it will ask you Would You Like to Try and Exclude Your Foreign Earned Income?  Click No, I know I don't qualify to exclude my foreign income.

Assuming she paid foreign tax on her income, you then need to go to the foreign tax credit section of TurboTax.

  1. Enter foreign tax credit in the search box at the top of the page and click the Jump to link
  2. Click 'Yes" you paid foreign taxes
  3. Click through the screens regarding foreign interest and dividends
  4. Click yes that you have reported all your foreign income already in TurboTax
  5. Click that you want to take a credit
  6. Answer question about the Simplified Limitation Election
  7. Choose income type for wages  - it will be General category income
  8. Add XXX as the country
  9. Enter description -XXX wages
  10. Enter Income amount that you previously reported in TurboTax
  11. Enter your taxes you paid on your foreign income in the box "Other income"
  12. Continue through ALL the foreign tax credit screens until done.
