In the interview of the desktop TurboTax Deluxe for Mac, I missed a little thing for estimated taxes for the next year -- for 2024, in this case. And that had the program telling me that estimated taxes would not be necessary, when in fact they are (and now I have a little penalty to deal with).
As you go along in the interview, on the page that asks about withholding and estimated taxes already paid, it says to enter 0 if you expect no taxes to be withheld over the course of the year. But I left it blank. Only later when I looked at the TT worksheet did I see that TT had entered last year's withholding on the line where I should have entered 0. Because it thought I'd have that same withholding again in 2024, it told me estimated taxes are not necessary. Once I correctly entered 0, then it outlined suggested estimated taxes for me.
So, I missed that particular little instruction to enter 0, instead assuming TT would keep the field zero if I left it blank. I'm irritated the program filled in a figure but didn't tell me in the interview it was doing so.
In any case, a warning if you're in that situation, and perhaps a suggestion for an interview tweak there.
