W2 information incomplete

My Son lives with me in NY state but works in a NJ bank and he received two separate W2 for 2024. One for NY & one for NJ(non-resident W2). However, employer entered federal income info only on NY W2 but left NJ W2 blank(there was only NJ state income & tax info). So when he used Turbotax to do taxes, he was guided to mail in his tax return for federal & NJ state because, according to Ttax, if federal income info is missing from W2, then tax return needs to be mailed. 

I want to avoid this situation for tax return in 2025. What can my son do so employer fills in federal income in both W2s divided according to his Non-resident status? Otherwise, what is his alternative for next tax return so that he is able to file electronically for federal and both NY & NJ state returns? Thanks in advance.

No problem having 2 W2s.  Do it this way......

If the EIN is the same and you work in more than 1 state or city, sometimes they will give you another W2 with the extra state information on it and the top part the same or not filled in. If this is the case, enter 1 W-2 but include both state and local taxes on it. It will let you type in more than one line for boxes 15-20. Don’t add the boxes together. If the locality in box 20 is the same you can simply combine the values in boxes 18 and then the values in box 19 together.

Same for boxes 12 and 14 if there is no room on the first W2 they can give you another W2 with the extra boxes on it. So list them all on 1 W2. For box 12 just enter it in the next row or box. It doesn’t have to match the box 12 a-d etc.
