Hi Team,
I need a help in filling the the W-7 form for ITIN application for my spouse.
Actually, my visa and spouse visa got expired in Sep 2025. We have applied for extension and I got Receipt notice and waiting for the Approval.
Given this situation, for tax filing for the year 2025, I am applying ITIN for my spouse.
In W-7 Form, what should i mention 6c ( i.e. Visa Type, Visa number and Visa Expiration date)
should i mention the whatever the details on the visa even though if it is past date ?
or should i mention the receipt number instead of visa number, in this case what visa expiration date i should mention?
Please help on this.
Please note we have got receipt notice for extension and waiting to get the approval

Just need some clarification to your question, what type of visa does your spouse currently have (tourist, student, or working)? If it's a working visa, your spouse should already be eligible to have a Social Security Number (SSN). If she doesn't she won't be able to get an ITIN because Form W-7 is only for individuals who aren't eligible for an SSN.
If it isn't a working visa, you enter the details in line 6c. in Form W-7 as follows:
Hi @CesarJ Thanks for your response
My spouse visa is H4 and she is not working that's the reason I chose to apply ITIN.
So in case of my spouse, I should still need to be enter the visa number and visa expiration date even if it is expired (in past).
no need to enter receipt number right?
No, you do not need to enter a receipt number. Yes, you should enter the visa number and its (expired) expiration date on Line 6c of Form W-7. The IRS will use this to verify your spouse's identity.
TurboTax doesn't support Form W-7, so there are a few steps you'll have to take to file your return.
You'll need to use TurboTax Desktop. If you've already begun your return in TurboTax Online, go here to transfer your tax data.
Download Form W-7 directly from the IRS, fill it in, and print it out.
See the IRS instructions.
Complete your return as you normally would in TurboTax Desktop, but leave the applicant's Social Security number blank.
When your return is finished and you get to the File section, you'll see a pop-up error message about having no Social Security number. Select OK.
Choose to print and mail your return (you can't e-file without a Social Security number).
Mail your return, W-7, and supporting documents to:
Internal Revenue Service
ITIN Operations
PO Box 149342
Austin, TX [removed]
Instead of mailing, you can also bring your printed, signed return (along with any attachments per the filing instructions, such as W-2s or 1099s), the completed W-7, proof of identity, and foreign status documents to an acceptance agent or an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center.
