Upcoming Tax Year 2023 filing: Which Turbo Tax can I use per the circumstance indicated

I am a long time user of TurboTax, specifically the ‘Premier’ version due to a rental home situation for which my wife was the sole owner, mortgage free and fully depreciated after 30 years of rental (rental income and losses reported on Schedule E).

My wife passed away due to cancer this past March, 2023. Under an established Trust, that property, her IRA account, and her car were transferred over to her only son, in April, as an inheritance. Per our Estate/Trust Lawyer, no taxes will be due both federally and state (New Mexico) due to the total value of all estate transferred property being under $600,000.

Given the noted circumstance, what, if any, 2023 TurboTax version can/should I purchase and use to report the above circumstance to realize an appropriate and complete filling, both federally and to the State?

-or do I need to seek CPA help with this upcoming 2023 tax year filing?

I am very sorry for your loss.

Frankly, you might want to use a tax professional for the 2023 tax year since there could be complications and your state is a community property state.

The suggestion by @tagteam is a good one, though you may certainly also continue to use the TurboTax product.

In the year of death, you can still file a joint tax return.  You would report the income received from your wife's rental properties in 2023 the same as they were reported in prior years but you "dispose" of the associated assets as of the date of her death.

Since you'll be reporting the same type of income, the same version would work well, or you can move to the online TurboTax platform.  HERE is how to do that.

With TurboTax online, you can start with the basic version of TurboTax and upgrade as needed.  Also, our online product offers an expert-assisted version, where a TurboTax professional (a CPA, Enrolled Agent, or attorney) can assist you as you work through the program.

A TurboTax Live Assisted expert can assist with both program navigation and tax law questions as you work on your return.  You can connect with an expert via chat or telephone as often as needed throughout the year.

Please accept my condolences on your loss.
