If you are not married the other return won't affect you or apply to you.  Totally separate and different returns.  You are both Single or one of you is Head of Household if you claim a qualifying child.

That rule about one spouse itemizing and the other one having to itemize, or both spouses having to use standard deduction only comes into play if you are married and filing married filing separately.    You are not married so that rule has nothing to do with how you file.   As VolvoGirl said, you are both Single or if there is a dependent child in your family then one of you might file as Head of Household and claim the child.
