How do I go about claiming a baby adopted in the middle of December if I don't have a social security number for him yet?

Unfortunately, you will not be able to include your adopted baby on your Tax Return until you receive their social security number from SSA.

You have two options regarding filing your Tax Return in this situation:

1) You can file now, without your baby as a Dependent, and then Amend your Tax Return after you have their social security number.  If you choose this option, you can click here for instructions on Amending your tax return: How to Change a Tax Return You Already Filed.  

2) You can wait to file until you receive their social security number before you file your Tax Return.

@TurboTaxRachelW I thought they were now saying that if the return is filed without an SSN then child tax credit isn't allowed, even on an amended return, although I think it may be if there is an ATIN.  I think if they should wait, especially if there is going to be a refund.

Thanks.  That pretty much supports what I said.  Except that it says if it goes beyond the extension deadline then the opportunity for CTC/ACTC/EIC is lost.  And doesn't address ATIN.
