First never file a return you are unsure of ... ask questions before not after filing.
Next, you did nothing wrong ... the program gave you the $2800 credit at the beginning of the interview and then when you said you already got $1400 the refund was reduced by that amount which is correct. Not only do you get the third stimulus for the child but you also get the Child Tax Credit which you will see on form 8812.
Save a PDF of the return now and review the entire return to see how the credits were calculated.
How to get a copy after filing
Q. Is this an error?
A. No. The $1400 stimulus is a 2021 tax benefit. The money received earlier was essentially an advance payment. Any stimulus not paid in advance is claimed, as the "recovery rebate credit" on the 2021 tax return filed in 2022. Dependents born in 2021 qualify for the rebate credit (as well as the child tax credit).
Q. Is this going to get kicked back?
A. No.
