TurboTax is showing our kid is not eligible to be a dependent even though we entered all the details correctly. Can you please help on this?

My kid is 2+ years old and because of the above mentioned reason we are not able to add dependent care deductions.

Go back to My Info on the left side of the online program screen. Edit the dependent and carefully check your answers to the questions.

Note - A child born in 2025 is deemed to have lived in your home for the entire year.


Make sure you select them as your Child, that you selected that they lived in your home for the Whole Year, temporary absence for education is deemed living in your home. That they did NOT provide over one-half of their own support (You Did), that you indicated there was no one else in the household providing support to them, and that you did NOT check the box labeled Not valid for employment in the Social Security number section.

 

If all your answers are correct then delete them as a dependent and re-enter.

Please go back through the interview for that dependent. 

(Go to "My Info" or "Personal Info" and select EDIT for your name, continue to the list of dependents.)

 

There is one confusing question that gives people a problem sometimes and that is when the program asks if the child supplied more than half their support, 

You must answer "No" if they are your dependent.

Try closing TurboTax, clearing your cache and deleting your cookies. Review the TurboTax Help article How to clear your cache and How do I delete cookies? for specific instructions for your browser. Also, reboot your computer.

 

Also try deleting your dependent and then entering them again.

I tried all these multiple times, but nothing is working out. My tax filing got delayed by 2 weeks just because of this. I have been a TurboTax customer since I started filing in US and there is no way to directly contact you folks which is really frustrating. I'm filing the tax without him as dependent.

I would like to take a deeper look at this. However, I need a diagnostic file, which is a copy of your tax return that has all of your personal information removed. You can send one to us by following the directions below:

 

For TurboTax Online:

  1. Sign into your online account.
  2. Locate the Tax Tools on the left-hand side of the screen.
  3. A drop-down will appear. Select Tools
  4. On the pop-up screen, click on “Share my file with agent.”
  5. This will generate a message that a diagnostic file gets sanitized and transmitted to us.
  6. Please provide the Token Number that was generated in the response.

For TurboTax Desktop/Download Versions:

  1. Open your return.
  2. Click the Online tab in the black bar across the top of TurboTax and select “Send Tax File to Agent” *
  3. This will generate a message that a diagnostic copy will be created. Click on OK and the tax file will be sanitized and transmitted to us.
  4. Please provide the Token Number (including the dash) that was generated in the response.

*(If using a MAC, go to the menu at the top of the screen, select Help, then “Send Tax File to Agent".
