Turbotax generating 2 5329s for me that shouldn't be there

I can't figure out how to get my return corrected (not filed yet): 1) I entered 2 1099Rs, one for 33127, one for 48251; 2) Line 52b of Form 5329 reads 114,505, when it should read 81,378 (a difference of 33,127): and 3)  Turbotax also generated a 5329 for my wife of 33127 - I did not input a 1099R for my wife. How do I get Turbotax to delete these 2 incorrect 33127 inputs?

Turbotax has generated two Form 5329s for you and your wife because the Form is for each individual.

If Unnecessary: If your spouse did not have an RMD, excess contribution, or premature distribution, the form is likely not needed and can be deleted, though it generally does not cause issues if filed.

To delete the unnecessary Forms, do the following:

  1. When inside of your TurboTax account, go to Tax Tools found on the left panel.
  2. Click on the down arrow to expand the menu
  3. Scroll down and select Tools
  4. Select Delete a form from the menu options that appear
  5. Look for Form 5329-S (T=Taxpayer, S=Spouse)
  6. Click on the trash can icon to the right of the Form

Forms typically generate, as an example, if you have a required minimum distribution (RMD) that had to be taken, but was not.

When inputting the information from your Form1099-Rs, if you were prompted to answer questions about RMD, this is an indication that a minimum distribution was required.

Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) are mandatory withdrawals from retirement accounts starting at the age of 73.

If you are now at the age, but did not take the distribution, here are a few things to know:

  • You must immediately take the distribution to minimize penalties, which are 25% of the shortfall, or 10% if corrected within two years
  • The first RMD must be taken by April 1 of the year following the year you reach age 73
  • Subsequent RMDs are required by Dec 31 annually

When in TurboTax and you see, "Let's get more information about your RMD", follow these steps:

  1. If you do not know what your RMD is, contact your financial advisor to assist you
  2. Don't enter an amount if this is your first year and you will be taking the distribution by April 1, enter "0" instead

So why is there a 5329 generated for my wife when I did not even enter a 1099R for her?

You will need to review your 1099-R summary and see who each is assigned to - you or spouse. One of them has been accidentally assigned to your spouse.
