Hello everyone, hope all is well.
This is a weird situation for me but this is the first year I forgot to file taxes before Oct 15. (2021 Personal tax return as a small business owner.) I filed an extension in April and lost track of time.
Will the 2021 Turbotax Desktop software product (available as a download for filing prior years' taxes) allow me to e-file my 2021? If yes, can it do both federal and state? If no, is mailing my taxes my only option?
Thank you,
Anatoly

E-filing is permanently closed for 2021 returns. The only way you can file is by mail. Print, sign and date the return in ink, and mail it in.
When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
If you are getting a refund, there is not a penalty for filing past the deadline. If you owe taxes, the interest/penalties will be calculated by the IRS based on how much you owe and when they receive your return and payment. The IRS will bill you for this; it will not be calculated by TurboTax.
Efile closed ... in the FILE tab your ONLY option is to mail it in.

Thank you very much for your very quick and detailed response!
Check around to local places. Maybe another place can still efile it. Because if you mail and are getting a refund it is taking a very loooooong time to get it, like 10 months or more.
The IRS has efile closed until next January (usually mid month) and some tax pros can still efile the last 3 tax years once the efile system opens up again.
