When entering income, why does the program ask if the amount is for both or one of the married couple filing jointly?

I am not sure where you are being asked this question or what the context is, but some states tax the spouses separately, so it's good (or even required) to allocate income to one spouse or the other.
I guess it answers my question but I'm surprised you don't know that when you work the income section of your return on TurboTax, every time you input an income source the program asks if this is income for you, your wife, or both. Given your answer, I see why this is done even though our state doesn't tax husband and wife differently when they are filing joint returns.
