Turbo tax considered my status as single when I have a dependent son of 22 years old, full time student, who lives in my house, and has no income. I completely support him

I am supposed to have the standard deduction of head of household.

As long as you meet the qualifications below, then you should qualify for the head of household filing status.

  • Pay for more than half of the household expenses.
  • Be considered unmarried for the tax year.(you must have lived apart from spouse for the last six months of 2016)
  • You must have a qualifying child or dependent.

Please view the Turbo Tax FAQ below, for more information about qualifying for head of household.

Once you review the qualifications, please review all of your answers in Turbo Tax. One wrong answer will disqualify you for head of household. You must answer yes to the question that asks, "Did you pay more than half the cost to keep up your home in 2016?", or you do not qualify for head of household filing status.

Please follow the directions below, to get back to the questions that qualify you for head of household.

  • Sign in to your account.
  • Click take me to my return.
  • Click my account, at the top of the page.
  • Select tools in the drop down menu.
  • Click topic search, type in head of household and click go.
