Turbo tax charges New York tax on exempt New York State pension again

Every year I struggle with this.  This year per my notes I left all three cells 14-16 blanks on the 1099-R.  I am able  to enter the cell 2a, 'Federal taxable amount', into page 2, line 29 'Pension...exclusion' on New York IT-201 form.  Will this due or do I have to go back to the federal return and enter EXEMPT in cell 14 as shown on the 1099.

After your Form 1099-R is entered into TurboTax you should see a screen that says, "Where is your distribution from?" You should select the top one. Retirement Distribution from other pensions of New York State.  When you do this your distribution should go to your New York State Income Tax Return and be recognized as excluded.  This should put your excludable pension on line 26 of your Form IT-201.

To get to those screens in TurboTax to review your entries, you can:

  1. Click on Search at the top right of your TurboTax screen
  2. Type Form 1099-R in the search box
  3. Click on the link Jump to Form 1099-R
  4. Select your Form 1099-R for your New York State pension and follow through the screens until you see "Where is your distribution from?"
  5. Click on the top circle and "Continue"
