Trying to get my taxes in the mail by deadline (10/16) - why do the forms still say mail by 4/18/17 -how will I know how much the penalty is for filing late

Date is ok.  Just ignore that.  You won't know the penalty amount.  Just wait for the IRS to send you a bill.  That's common.  It depends on exactly when they get your tax due payment.  Even though the extension to file was Oct 16 any tax due was still due back on April 18.
