Trying to file as head of household ( HOH )

As I read the head of household criteria, I feel I qualify as I am unmarried, have an unmarried son ( age 21 ) who lives with me, and I paid for more than half the cost of keeping the home for 4 years. A “qualifying person” lived with me in the home for more than half the year (  (a) Your UNMARRIED child, adopted child, grandchild, great-grandchild, or stepchild. ). Turbotax says he does not qualify ergo no HOH. Why is this ?

For your son to qualify as a “qualifying child” he would have to be either under the age of 19 or under the age of 24 and a full-time student.  He must have lived with you for more than half the year and you would have had to pay for more than half his support.

For your son to qualify as a “qualifying dependent” would have to have lived with you for more than half the year, and again, you would have had to pay for more than half his support and his income should be less than $4050.

If you still feel that you meet all of the requirements, please go back through all of your entries of Personal Information.  You may want to delete your son’s dependent information and reenter.
