Tried to submit returns for filing but keep getting an error message that they were already submitted

It's possible you have been a victim of identity theft, if you haven't filed a return.

Unfortunately your only option will be to paper file your return. I would also suggest you Complete IRS Form 14039, Identity Theft Affidavit and mail it along with your return.
