The Skinny on Moving Expenses

Moving Expenses

A member of the Armed Forces on active duty may be eligible to deduct moving expenses if the move was due to a military order and permanent change of station. This includes a move from the taxpayer’s home to the first post of active duty, a move from one permanent post of duty to another, and a move from the last post of duty to the taxpayer’s home or to a nearer point in the United States. A move from the last post of duty must occur within 1 year of ending active duty or within the period allowed under the Joint Travel Regulations. The expenses of a member’s spouse or dependent due to permanent change of station may also be eligible. Moving expenses are deductible to arrive at AGI to the extent the expenses are not reimbursed or paid for by the taxpayer’s employer.

NOTE: Only members of the military on active duty may deduct qualified moving expenses. Otherwise, moving expenses incurred after 2017 and before 2026 are not allowed as a deduction.

The direct expenses of actually moving a taxpayer and his or her household goods and personal effects, storage, and travel (including lodging) from the former residence to the new residence are deductible to arrive at AGI.

Instead of actual expenses, a mileage rate of $.16 per mile, for 2021, can be used for driving one’s own automobile. The cost of meals en route is no longer deductible as a direct moving expense.

Indirect moving expenses, including a house-hunting trip, temporary living expenses, and expenses related to the sale, purchase, or lease of the new or old residence are not deductible.
