The site is telling me to come back on January 27th to finish my state taxes as that's when forms will be ready. Do I have to wait to file the federal on that date also?

You do have the option to file the federal now and the state later ... just delete the state return on the state tab and complete the FILE tab to only send the federal return. 

Then to complete the state later,  AFTER the federal has been accepted by the IRS, you will log in and click on "add a state" to open the return, complete the state & complete the FILE tab again for the state transmission.
