The IRS sent a letter saying my bank rejected my tax payment, but Turbotax says that my e-file was accepted. What's the difference here?

The efile was accepted means the return got there and was accepted for processing ... but the payment info was not correct so the IRS could not complete the transaction ... one has nothing to do with the other.

The IRS only accepted your efile FOR processing.  Not that it is right. They only verified your name and ssn.

since you owed on 4/15 and the payment was rejected,  you now owe a late payment penalty and dishonor fee.

what was the reason the bank rejected the payment?
