The IRS rejected our 2019 AGI number. We got married in 2020. Are we supposed to add our AGI numbers together and submit or somehow submit them separately?

The 2019 AGI will be different for each of you assuming you both filed 2019 federal tax returns.  You should enter the 2019 AGI that is shown on your separate federal tax returns, Form 1040 Line 8b.

If one of you did not file a 2019 federal tax return then the 2019 AGI will be 0 (zero) for that person.

Thanks for this. I think the issue is that my wife never used TurboTax before, so now we are filing together and her AGI is not in the system, nor can I find a way to add hers separately. Should I just add hers to mine for 2019?

thanks

No the AGI doesn't need to be in the system.   You have to manually enter each of your AGI.   When you go through the File tab it will first ask for your AGI then later ask for her AGI.   You are filing a Joint return, right?   You entered her name and ssn under My Info and entered all her income?

Oh and you may have to enter zero for one of you or both of you.   The IRS took so long last year to process returns that the AGI didn't get entered into the IRS in time.   Especially if you mailed a return.   When did you each file?  Did either of you mail 2019.

If you can’t get it to efile you will have to print and mail it.

Be sure to attach copies of your W2s and any 1099s that have withholding on them.  You have to mail federal and state in separate envelopes because they go to different places.  Get a tracking number from the post office when you mail them for proof of filing.

The trick to get around this issue is to tell TurboTax that you did not file last year.  Then the question will not come up and you can e-file.  This is not illegal and is not lying to the IRS.  It is just lying to TurboTax to get the program to work for you.

But I filed with turbotax and it seems to already be in there, can't find the place where I would say that I didn't file that year...

It is in there but not going to be correct because you are filing jointly.  That is why I said to just say you did not file last year.  If you say you filed last year, then the AGI will not match and you will have to mail the return.

Unfortunately I just can't find a way to backtrack and say I didn't file last year. That question doesn't seem to pop up anywhere in the form anymore so not sure how to do it, though that definitely sounds like the solution I'm looking for! thanks

If you are unable to navigate to the question about whether you filed a 2019 return, then use zero for the 2019 AGI.   Or if you have your spouse's 2019 tax return, her 2019 AGI is on line 8b of HER 2019 return.   But in many cases, the IRS does not have the AGI in the system so using zero is your best bet.   If none of those work, then print, sign and mail your 2020 tax return.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
