I need to pay calendar 2016 taxes. Do I need the 2017 or 2016 product? It seemed like 2017 product is requesting info for a 2017 W2 (as in preparation for April 2018).

The current Online version is only for 2017. So you have to buy the Desktop program for 2016. You use the same year program for the year you are preparing. You can buy 2016 programs here,
