Temporary support during divorce counted as alimony for taxes?

From what I have read, any temporary support paid to a spouse during the process of divorce can be counted as alimony for tax purposes, as long as it is part of a court-ordered agreement.

Does this also include the costs of paying a spouse's bills (not normal household expenses), or only direct cash support payments explicitly spelled out in the agreement?

Temporary support during divorce counted as alimony for taxes?

It would only cover the direct payment that is outlined in the court agreement. It would not include payments made outside of the amount specified in the court agreement. For example, if you were ordered to pay $500.00 as spousal support, but paid an additional $1,000 for the mortgage, you could only deduct the $500.00

What if the agreement specifically mentions paying for a car payment and insurance (not a specific dollar amount)? Can that be claimed as alimony for tax purposes?

See the IRS publication that gives the full list of what is considered alimony: https://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc452.html
