Taxes

  • Do I need to file taxes if I only made $2,000 for that specific year of 2022? Can I claim my deceased wife for the four months she was alive in 2022? (I have her w2s) Could that be why my refund is still pending? Status doesn't show anything but received. I did file 2023 and still waiting for something to update as far as my 2024.

You likely would not have to file a tax return if your income was only  $2,000 for 2022, unless you had income tax withheld that you would like to get back.  You can use this link to check if you need to file a tax return: Check if you need to file a tax return.

If your spouse was deceased in 2022, you would file a joint return for 2022 and include her W-2(s). If she had any income tax withheld, you may get a tax refund of her withholdings. You will have to file as single in 2023 and 2024 unless you have remarried.

You can use this link to check on your Federal refund.  Where's My Refund?

You can call the IRS: 1-800-829-1040 hours 7 AM - 7 PM local time Monday-Friday

If your refund is missing, you can Use IRS Form 3911. This form notifies the IRS about the missing refund and initiates a 'trace' on your refund.

Check the "Where's My Refund" tool before filing Form 3911 because Form 3911 is only helpful if the IRS has processed your tax return and the refund has been issued.

If the "Where's My Refund?" tool confirms that your refund has been sent to you but  you have not received it, you should consider filing Form 3911.
