You only proof is your bank statement or credit card showing it coming out.

Normally it takes from one to several days for the IRS to get paid the money owed to them if you used a bank account (routing and account numbers) for this purpose. If this was the case, one way to verify that is, of course, to check periodically for withdrawals from that account. If you sent the money by mail using a check, then you'll have to wait until that check is cashed by them.
