Tax Year Prior to 2020: I'm a contract employee (1099MISC), I work an hour away from home. Do I need my gas receipts for the deduction?

I can get the amount spent on gas from my bank statement and can calculate the miles.  But I don't have any actual receipts.

Your statements should work if they clearly state it was a gas station.  However, if you only work at the one location, you cannot deduct your mileage or gas.  This is considered to be commuting mileage.

That said, any trips between job sites, or for overnight travel can be deducted.  IF you do qualify for the vehicle deduction, you would deduct either the Actual Expenses (depreciation, gas, car washes, repairs, insurance, etc.) or the Standard Mileage Rate.

How to get to the area to enter your business expenses  While inside the software and working on your return, type Schedule C in the Search at the top of the screen (you may see a magnifying glass there).  There will be a popup that says Jump to Schedule C.  Select that to get to the general area.

Then:

  • select Edit next to your business (if it is there)
  • scroll to Business Expenses
  • then Select Business Vehicle Expenses
