Status of 2019 taxes

I prepared my taxes last week but the IRS wasn’t accepting tax return yet. How can I make sure that my taxes are complete and mailed off?

The best way to check the status of your tax return is to log on to your Turbo Tax account. On the first screen you will either see the e-file status, or it will say, Continue my return.

If it says Continue my return, go ahead and do that. Keep going until you submit the e-file.

If you have an e-file status:

  • Pending means your return was sent, but has not been accepted yet. In that case, you wait until it changes to accepted or rejected.
  • Accepted means you are all done.
  • Rejected means that the IRS has rejected your return and you need to correct something on it. In that case, you should click on Fix my return and follow the instructions.

Keep in mind if you also filed a state return, you will have a status for the federal and a separate status for the state.

If you chose not to e-file, your status will show Ready to Mail or Printed and Mailed. If you don't e-file, you are the one who has to print and mail the return, so do what you need to do, to finish the filing process.

Pending simply means that your e-filed return is on its way and that the government hasn't accepted or rejected it yet.

After January, e-filed returns generally sit in Pending status for 24–48 hours before coming back as either Accepted or Rejected. Sometimes state returns stay in Pending for several days or even longer.

Until your state or the IRS processes your return,  you may hear there's "no record found." That actually means the return's still being processed. Just check back in a few days.

You can check your E-filing status also by looking on the IRS Website, Where's my Refund.
