State taxes, Alaska and VA

Planning , but confused.   Own home in VA and minimal VA wages.  Spend 4-5 months in VA, 6 months working in AK while renting our lodging,  and the remainder of time traveling.  If move to AK (AK drivers license, etc), and then move back to VA 7 months later during the same calendar year, would AK wages legitimately be free from  VA income tax?  I assume if we keep VA drivers license, must pay VA taxes on AK wages?

To find your answer, you must look to the Virginia residency rules.  The driver's license and other documents aren't the deciding factor.

If you live in Virginia or maintain a home there for more than 183 days during the year, you are considered a Virginia resident for tax purposes.  If you 'move' to Alaska to work, but plan to return to Virginia when the job ends, Virginia will also consider you a Virginia resident for income tax purposes.

A Virginia resident must report income from all sources, as you are aware.
