State franchise tax board recently asked my husband for a copy of his (really it's our) 2022 return that we filed with turbo tax on a Mac. We sent them the fed and state returns pdf that was generated with turbotax mid-april 2023 -it showed we had gotten a state refund of about $600.
they sent him back a bill for a few hundred, mostly charging him (I am not involved somehow) for filing his taxes late. It also says that state return submitted had a mistake --and our refund is, they say, less by $50 and so we owed interest on this $50 as well as the late filing. (State franchise tax board seems to be saying both that the state return was never filed AND simultaneously that we got a return that was $50 high.)
How can we get proof that we filed via turbo tax (do have an e-filing receipt from turbo tax but it doesn't really say whose/which return) ?

Your post is confusing. You refer to "our" return, and later to "his taxes"----You say "we" got a state refund, of about $600-- but also cite that the state sent "him" a bill.......It cannot be both.
Did you file a joint tax return with your spouse? If you filed a joint return, all of your combined income would have been on ONE state tax return
Or did you file married filing separately? ("I am not involved somehow") If you filed married filing separately, then each of you would have filed your own state tax return.
You need to clarify how you filed with the state, and then sort this out with the state.
I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM THE IRS/STATE
TurboTax does not receive any information from the IRS or your state after your return was filed, so no one at TurboTax knows about a letter you received from the IRS or the state.
Print out copies of your 2022 federal and state returns and review them.
You have to access your own account and/or print it for yourself using exactly the same account and user ID that you used when you prepared the return.

Start a 2024 return online and enter some personal information so that the menu on the left opens up and lets you access your past year returns.
Many people have multiple TT accounts and forget how to access them. Log out of the account you are in now.
Or did you use the desktop version of TurboTax? If so, the files are on your own hard drive or any backup device you used like a flash drive.
You can get a free transcript from the IRS or for a fee of $30, an actual copy of your tax return.

SAVE YOUR TAX RETURNS !
EVERY year before mid-October you should save a copy of your tax return as a pdf and print a copy of it for your records. That way you will not be searching online frantically when you need it for a lender, FAFSA forms, your next tax return, etc.
In order to transfer a past year return to the new return you need the tax file
NOTE: TurboTax and the IRS save returns for seven years. Returns older than seven years are purged.
your saying my post is confusing because I am saying both his and our, and that's part of why it's confusing. yes, we filed a joint return, but all both letters are only to him (the first asking whether he filed and the 2nd after we sent them the copy of our old return) , even after they were given our joint return.
We used the desktop version and I have a pdf dated from April 2023 that is the turbotax printout of both fed and state returns. That's what we mailed them recently when he got the letter. That doesn't prove that we filed it, I suppose. (Although how could we get a return without filing?). I have a receipt for e-filing, but it doesn't specify what was filed. Does turbo tax have records of what returns they filed for me using the desktop version? I can see the date/time/amount and which credit card I used, but nothing that says they got my return.
The IRS probably only sends the letters to the first primary person listed on the Joint return. I wouldn't worry about that. There must be more they are questioning if they got your original return and sent you the refund. You have to call the IRS and talk to them and find out what's going on.
If you efiled there should be an Electronic Postmark page saying when you filed and when the IRS accepted it. Probably near the end. Here's mine for 2024.
