Do I need to have the 1099 forms stating I received refunds from the State and the Federal Returns for 2018?

If you received a state refund, you should receive 1099-G that needs to be entered on your tax return.  You can get a copy here.  It won't be taxable if all of the following are true:

  • You itemized deductions last year, instead of taking the standard deduction
  • You claimed state and local income taxes (not general sales taxes)
  • Claiming the deduction helped you increase your federal refund or lower your tax bill  -  if this is the case, then yes, you will need your 2018 tax return to find out how much of your AZ refund was taxable.

Yes, you should receive a 1099-G for your State Refund.  If you used TurboTax in 2018, though, the amount may be filled in for you if you transferred your 2018 data to your 2019 return.

Check the Arizona Dept. of Revenue to see how you can get your 1099-G online.
