My spouse died in Feb 2024. Social Security paid 2 months, and then pulled back one month of his benefits. After filing for the 1 month of benefits, I received payment for the 2nd month. His SSA-1099 shows 2 months of benefits instead of 1. I also received a SSA-1099M with the 1 month that was then paid to me. I have called the SS office for an amended SSA-1099 in Feb, but have not received it yet. I do not want to pay taxes on income we did not receive. What is the best way to report this in the tax software in order to file by 4/15/25? I owe money in taxes and do not want to overpay. Any suggestions?

You have two choices. You can file with everything on there and pay the extra and your return will go right thru processing because all of the numbers will match what is in the IRS files. Then you file an amended return after the corrected 1099-SSA arrives so that you can get a refund of the extra that you paid.
Or you can file the return with the correct amount in the social security boxes the way it should have been on the 1099-SSA. That may cause your return to be held for review but will be cleared up as soon as the corrected 1099-SSA shows up. Although if you may have to send a copy of the corrected form in if you receive a letter from the IRS.
Neither of those is a particularly great option but there they are. Sorry for your loss.
